Songs for Alexandria

Stephen Foster, who died destitute in 1864 at the age of 37, composed Beautiful Dreamer in the last years of his life. Stephen Green and his sister-in-law Fannie were singers and perhaps they sang this song in the midst of that war, remembering Stephen’s youngest sister, Alice, who had died so young just before the war began. Where Home Is was composed by George Frederick Root a famous ante-bellum and Civil War composer.  This famous parlor song was published in Cincinnati in 1885.
